The 15 Diseases of Leadership

Pope Francis enumerated the 15 diseases of leadership in an address to the Roman Curia on 22 December 2014. The Roman Curia comprises the Cardinals and other officials who are charged with running the church’s byzantine network of administrative bodies.

Therefore, I highly recommend it to everyone in leadership position everywhere.

Also, Gary Hamel, American Management expert, in a piece published in the Harvard Business Review of 14 April 2015, elaborated on The 15 Diseases of Leadership presented by Pope Francis. He has given them a corporate, circular or marketplace perspective.

According to him, leaders are susceptible to an array of debilitating maladies. They include arrogance, intolerance, myopia, and pettiness. When those diseases are not treated, they make the organization feeble. To have a healthy organization, we need healthy leaders.

Moreover, he added that through the years, he’s heard dozens of management experts enumerate the qualities of great leaders. But seldom do they speak plainly about the “diseases” of leadership.

The Pope, said he, is more forthright. He understands that as human beings we have certain proclivities — not all of them noble. Nevertheless, leaders should be held to a high standard because their scope of influence makes their ailments particularly infectious.
