DO NOT BOAST ABOUT TOMORROW
Do not boast about tomorrow. That is the warning from the wisest man who ever lived – King Solomon of ancient Israel. Why? Because you do not know what a day may bring forth. You can find that in the Wisdom Book of Proverbs 27.1.
Someone has said that sometimes perfectionism is procrastination in disguise. We postpone what we should do today because we do not want to make mistakes; we wait until we can find ‘the perfect way’.
But, it appears that one ‘blessing’ or ‘gift’ or ‘talent’ God has given me is frequently being requested to do things I am not prepared for or for which I do not have ‘sufficient’ experience. And I seem to have ‘Peter’s anointing’ of jumping out of the boat before considering that I might drown.
Consequently, I have had blunders aplenty! But I have also learned a lot through those blunders and gained plenty of experience!
Now, I have almost become an expert at profiting from blunders. By asking for honest feedback! The result? Continuous Improvement! You may call it experience!
In the process, I have discovered that people are quite generous when it comes to giving honest feedback if we are willing to ask. The problem is that some of us do not have the courage to receive honest feedback. It can be quite humbling! I speak from experience! But it is the key to personal growth and improvement.
But, boasting about tomorrow, postponing what should be done today until tomorrow is procrastination. The difficult task that should be carried out today will not get easier tomorrow, just because it is tomorrow. Remember that today is the tomorrow you were talking about yesterday! If anything, it will be more difficult and expensive. Why? Because we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Do not boast about tomorrow.
Just look at the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Do you still remember them? What have become of them? The book you said you would read, that course you said you would start, that habit you said you would drop, The Stop Doing List you said you would prepare. Have you postponed them till ‘tomorrow’? Or are you still analyzing and falling into ‘analysis paralysis‘ two months to the end of the year?
Or are you waiting to do it later?
Remember, ‘later’ is one of those dream killers, one of the countless obstacles we put up to derail our chances of success. The diet that starts ‘tomorrow’, the job search that starts ‘eventually’, the pursuit of the life dream that begins ‘someday’ combine with other self-imposed roadblocks and lock us on autopilot. Why do we do this to ourselves, anyway? Why don’t we act now? (Jennifer Reed).
King Solomon wisely stated, “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.” (Eccl. 11.4 NLT).
You have waited long enough for ‘good weather’; just go out there and do it. Go out and make a mess. And learn from it. That is how people make progress. You would be a better version of yourself because you did. Do not boast about tomorrow.
Michel de Montaigne is quoted as saying, “No wind favors he who has no destined port”. Until you decide what you want to do and set about to do it no circumstances will be favorable. Do not wait until you are ready to act. Get out and take action and you will become ready in the process.
There are opportunities you will never see, helpers you will never meet, and favors you will never receive until you get up and take action.
Enough of planning. Enough of analyses. Enough of waiting for favorable circumstances. Enough of waiting for opportunities. Favorable circumstances and opportunities have been waiting for you. Get up and take action. Do not boast about tomorrow!
The difficult task that should be carried out today will not get easier tomorrow, just because it is tomorrow. ~ Emmanuel Udo
